The stiffness of capacitive energy storage spot welding machine is directly reflected in the electromotive force signal collected in the welding process, and the influence of stiffness is tested in detail. In the test, only the stiffness of the substructure of the base welder is considered because the superstructure is moving and its stiffness is high. The stiffness of the spring between the lower (stationary) electrode and the support structure of the base welder is adjusted so that the welder has two different stiffness values of 88kN/mm and 52.5kN/mm respectively.
It can be seen that although the contact process of the electrodes in these two cases is very similar, and the path to reach the setting value of the welding machine’s electrical force is almost exactly the same, when the current is applied, the electrical force of the two cases is significantly different due to the different stiffness of the welding machine. During the welding process, the increment of electrical force at low stiffness is 133N(30lb), while the value is 334N(75lb) at high stiffness, that is, large stiffness leads to large changes in electrical force.
Welders with different stiffness provide different electrical forces, so the constraints on the growth of the solder core are different. Under high stiffness conditions, the expansion of the solder core will be more difficult, because the high stiffness will result in a greater reaction force from the electrode.
